What Must I Do To Be Saved?

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved, you and your household” (Acts 16:30, 31). The Gospel is all of God’s grace. It is Good News, because Jesus has done it all – it is His person and work a person must look to and believe. Jesus is the Son of God, perfect and without sin, who suffered the punishment of the wrath of God on the cross that his people deserved so that they may be reconciled to God and enter into direct communion with him. This substitutionary sacrifice for his people’s sin, foreshadowed in the Old Testament, gives eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord for those who believe.

But what does the Bible say about ourselves, Jesus, and what He did? What is it a person needs to be saved from? We need to be saved from the wrath of God due to us because of the guilt of our sin. (Romans 1:18; see John 3:36) Not just the wrath of God but also the consequences of our sin; which are death (Genesis 2:16, 17; see Romans 5:12, 21; 6:23) and condemnation. (John 3:17-20; see Romans 5:16,18)

Hear what God says about us all, “There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10-12)

And now the good news – the Gospel – showing us what God has done in Christ for his people:

“But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. (Romans 3:21-26)

What are you to do? Believe what the Bible says about you – you are a sinner who deserves death and the wrath of God because of your sin. Believe in Jesus and what the Bible says about him and what He did – He is the only begotten Son of God, the eternal Word who became flesh and was sinless and perfect; He was crucified on a cross and died bearing the sins of His people and rose again on the third day.
